COMPRESSION TEST MASTERY

Read 4-cylinder cranking compression data and identify which cylinder is failing — and why.

THE CONCEPT
WHY THIS MATTERS

$400–800 wasted parts cost per misdiagnosis on average. Around 30% of "compression problems" turn out to be cranking voltage issues that masquerade as low compression — and techs replace head gaskets that didn't need replacing. Worse: the new gasket fails because the warped head was never resurfaced. Customer drives home, comes back in 6 weeks, the comeback eats the original profit. Reading compression correctly the first time is the difference between a one-visit fix and a three-visit margin disaster.

The Physics / Mechanism

How compression works: piston squeezes the charge against the closed valves and head gasket. Pressure is measured at TDC with throttle held open. Healthy variance: under 10% cylinder-to-cylinder.

What failure looks like: low compression isolated to one cylinder = single-cylinder seal failure (valve, ring, gasket). Low across multiple adjacent cylinders = head gasket between them. Low across ALL cylinders = cam timing off, or universal mechanical wear.

TOOLS YOU'LL USE
  • Compression tester (0–300 psi) — the cheap one is fine. Focus on consistent technique.
  • Battery load tester — verify 9.6V+ during crank. Weak battery = false low readings on every cylinder.
  • Squirt bottle of clean engine oil — for the wet test, after dry baseline.
  • Manufacturer service info — cylinder-to-cylinder spec, not the published "minimum" floor (that floor is intentionally conservative and not diagnostic).
TIME IN THE BAY

Competent tech: 25 minutes total. Where time goes — 5 min setup (battery load test, plug removal, throttle wedge), 10 min cranking each cylinder (throttle WOT, all plugs out), 10 min wet test on suspect cylinders + interpretation. Red flag: if you're past 40 minutes, you're probably cranking with a weak battery or didn't pull all the plugs. Start over with battery first.

CRANKING WITH A WEAK BATTERY

Weak battery = slow cranking = artificially low readings on every cylinder. ALWAYS verify battery is above 9.6V during cranking before trusting any compression number.

LEAVING SPARK PLUGS IN

Cylinder compression pressures fight cranking torque. If other plugs are in, the engine doesn't spin fast enough — you get false-low readings across the board. Pull all four plugs before testing any of them.

NOT HOLDING WOT THROTTLE

Closed throttle restricts intake airflow. You need full atmospheric air drawn into each cylinder. Wedge the throttle blade open with a clean rag.

COMPARING TO PUBLISHED MINIMUM, NOT TO OTHER CYLINDERS

The published spec is a conservative floor. A reading at the floor still tells you nothing if you don't compare to the other three. Cylinder-to-cylinder variance is the strongest signal — 10% is the rule, full stop.
