A cooling system that loses pressure over time is leaking somewhere — externally or internally. External leaks are obvious and cheap (hose, water pump, radiator). Internal leaks (head gasket, cracked head) are catastrophic if missed: customer drives 200 miles, coolant disappears into combustion, engine overheats, head warps, the whole thing comes back as a $4,000 repair instead of the $250 gasket job you could have quoted. The pressure test catches the leak. The block test confirms WHERE. Skipping either is how shops eat warranty claims.
Modern cooling systems are pressurized to ~15–18 psi by the radiator cap. The pressure raises the boiling point of coolant (~265°F at 16 psi vs 212°F at atmospheric), letting the engine run safely at 200–230°F. A sealed system should hold that pressure for 15 minutes minimum after pump-up at ambient temperature — any decay means a leak.
Combustion gases entering the coolant via a failed head gasket bring CO2 with them. CO2 turns chemical block-test fluid from blue to yellow — that color change is the most definitive diagnosis you can make. No yellow = no combustion leak. Yellow = head gasket or crack, and the repair quote writes itself.
- Pressure tester pump + adapter — Stant or equivalent. Includes radiator-cap adapter so you can test the cap independently from the system.
- Block test kit (chemical) — clear tube with blue test fluid. Yellow = combustion gas in coolant = head gasket failure. The most definitive non-invasive head-gasket diagnosis.
- Vacuum-fill tool — required on modern cars to prevent air pockets. Skip this on a hybrid or EU-spec engine and the customer comes back in 24 hours with an overheat code.
- Coolant refractometer — checks freeze point and specific gravity. Tap water topped into a customer's system tells you about maintenance habits + risk.
Competent tech: 30 minutes. Where time goes — 5 min visual + cap test, 10 min pressurize + observe + locate any external leak, 10 min block test (warm the engine, capture gases, watch for color change), 5 min vacuum-fill and pressure verify. Red flag: if you're past 50 minutes, you're skipping steps or testing cold. Reset and start with the visual.

A weak radiator cap loses pressure to the overflow reservoir and customer thinks the system has a leak. Caps are cheap ($15) and degrade over time — gaskets harden, spring weakens. Always test the cap with the pump's cap adapter against its rated pressure (stamped on cap, typically 15–18 psi). Bad cap = false leak diagnosis.
No combustion bubbles visible in the radiator? Doesn't mean no head gasket. Small gasket leaks pass intermittent gas under load that you'll never see during a static pressure test. The chemical block test catches CO2 in trace amounts — it's far more sensitive than visual inspection. Run it any time you suspect head gasket. $25 of fluid versus a $2,000 misdiagnosis quote.
Modern engines (especially turbo, hybrid, and many German makes) have complex cooling galleries with multiple high points. Traditional bleed-screw filling leaves air pockets that cause hot spots and overheat codes within 24 hours. Always vacuum-fill: pull system to ~25 inHg, watch for vacuum hold (confirms no leaks), then suck coolant in through the same hose. Five-minute procedure that prevents a comeback.
Pressure-testing a fully hot engine is dangerous (cap removal causes coolant geyser) and gives misleading readings (system is already pressurized from heat). Always let the engine cool to warm (around 140°F), then test. Block test runs differently — that one needs an engine warm enough to be producing combustion gas, so test it with engine running at idle after the cap removal step.

- Healthy system holds 15–18 psi for 15+ minutes at warm-engine temp. Any decay = leak (external or internal).
- Always test the radiator cap independently — a bad cap mimics a system leak.

- Always test warm (~140°F), never hot. Pressure-testing a hot system is dangerous and unreliable.
When a customer says "I keep adding coolant," that's not a complaint — that's a diagnosis path. Visual + cap test + pressure decay + block test, in that order, gets you from "losing coolant" to either a $30 hose replacement or a quoted head-gasket job in 30 minutes. The shops that skip steps quote the gasket job, do the gasket job, and discover after the customer is gone that the radiator was the issue all along. Methodical wins. Customer's wallet appreciates the right repair.
