HEAD DISASSEMBLY · REASSEMBLY

Strip the head down right, measure what matters, reassemble with TTY bolts in the correct sequence. The one A1 procedure where shortcuts cost engines.

THE CONCEPT
WHY THIS MATTERS

Head jobs are high-stakes work. Get the disassembly wrong and parts can't go back where they came from. Skip a measurement and the engine fails in 5,000 miles. Reassemble TTY (torque-to-yield) head bolts out of sequence or in their old condition and the head warps, the gasket fails, the customer is back, and you're eating the labor on a job that should have been done once. This is the procedure where senior techs separate themselves from parts-cannon guys.

The Physics / Mechanism

A cylinder head is precision-machined to mate against the deck via the head gasket. Clamping load comes from the head bolts and must be even across the surface. TTY bolts stretch into their plastic deformation zone on first install — that's where they get their consistent clamping force. Reuse a stretched TTY bolt and the new clamping load is wrong; uneven; sometimes too low. The head distorts under combustion cycling, gasket fails. Always replace TTY bolts. Always follow OEM's torque sequence (typically center-out, multi-pass).

TOOLS YOU'LL USE
  • Calibrated click torque wrench — must read accurately at the spec range (often 25–80 ft-lb for head bolts). Re-calibrate annually.
  • Torque angle gauge — required for TTY bolts. Initial torque sets the snug, then you turn the gauge for the additional yield angle (often 60–120°).
  • Straightedge + feeler gauges — measure head and deck flatness. Beyond 0.003" warp typically requires resurfacing.
  • Valve guide gauge or small bore mic — verify guide-to-stem clearance during disassembly.
  • Spring height micrometer — measure installed spring height after valve job; shim if needed.
TIME IN THE BAY

Competent tech: 3-5 hours on a typical inline-4 head job, longer on V-engines. Where time goes — 1 hr R&R, 1 hr disassembly + measurement, 1 hr cleanup + parts sourcing, 1-2 hr reassembly + torque sequence. Skipping any single measurement to save 10 minutes risks the entire job. Methodical wins.

REUSING TTY HEAD BOLTS

TTY (torque-to-yield) bolts stretch into permanent deformation on first install. That's how they provide consistent clamping. Reused, the stretched bolt produces wrong torque values for the same angle reading — clamping is uneven, often too low. Head warps. Gasket fails. ALWAYS replace TTY bolts on reassembly. Cost: $50. Avoided comeback: $1,500.

SKIPPING DECK + HEAD FLATNESS CHECK

Warped head or deck = even a perfect head gasket and bolt job fails in months. Always check both with a precision straightedge across multiple axes. Beyond 0.003" warp typically requires machine work. Quote the resurfacing during the head job, not after a comeback.

WRONG TORQUE SEQUENCE

Random or outside-in torque sequences distort the head as you tighten — bolts you torqued first end up looser as later bolts pull the head into shape. Always follow OEM sequence (typically center-out, criss-cross, multi-pass). It's printed in service info for a reason. Memorize the pattern for the engines you see most.

IGNORING VALVE SEAT WIDTH SPEC

During valve work, seat width matters as much as seat angle. Too wide = poor heat transfer + carbon buildup. Too narrow = seat erosion + valve recession. OEM publishes a spec range (often 0.040–0.060"). Measure after cutting; re-cut if outside spec. Skipping this turns a $1,200 head job into a 30,000-mile comeback.
