SMOKE DECISION TREE
Exhaust smoke is the engine talking. Color + timing + conditions + supporting tests narrow the diagnosis. The capstone module that integrates the entire A1 diagnostic toolkit.
Smoke complaints are the most misdiagnosed engine complaint in the bay. Same smoke color can mean five different things depending on timing and conditions. White at startup = harmless condensation. White steady under load = head gasket failure. Black under acceleration = rich fuel. Black at idle = bigger fuel system problem. The decision tree below walks you through the systematic process that gets to the right diagnosis the first time.
Smoke is unburned product in the exhaust. Three colors, three sources: WHITE is water vapor or coolant. BLUE is oil burning. BLACK is unburned fuel from rich mixture. The TIMING (cold/warm/load/idle) and CONDITIONS (oil level, coolant level, misfire codes) narrow each color down to the specific component. Pair this module's tree with the diagnostic tests you've learned in Modules 01-09 to close cases definitively.

White smoke at cold startup that clears in 30 seconds = normal condensation, especially in cold or humid weather. White smoke that persists during warm operation, smells sweet, and accompanies coolant loss = head gasket. Don't quote a $1,500 head gasket job on a $0 normal-condensation morning.
Blue smoke means oil is burning, but the SOURCE varies. Startup-only blue = valve guides. Steady blue under all conditions = rings or worn cylinder walls. Blue under deceleration only = turbo seals. Test before condemning. Different sources, different repair costs.
Black smoke from rich mixture can be caused by mechanical fuel-system faults OR by ECU running on a faulty input (bad MAF, bad coolant temp). Always check sensor PIDs against ambient before tearing into fuel injection. A $50 sensor often fixes "black smoke" complaints.
No visible bubbles, coolant level holding, but customer reports white smoke + power loss? Run the block test (Module 03). The chemical test catches CO2 in coolant even when the leak is intermittent. The most definitive head-gasket diagnosis available without teardown.

A customer pulls into the bay complaining of smoke.
