Operating Pressure Ranges
Mechanical gauge readings at the sender port. Confirm against OE spec for outliers.

Low Pressure Diagnostic Flow
- Verify dash gauge with mechanical gauge. Dash gauges and pressure switches often lie. Always confirm at the sender port.
- Check oil level and condition. Low or fuel-diluted oil drops pressure first. Sniff for fuel; look for milky coolant intrusion.
- Compare to viscosity spec. 5W-20 in a car that should run 5W-30 reads lower. Check oil filler cap or OEM spec.
- Test cold vs hot. Low cold = pump suction or relief valve. Low hot = bearings, pump wear, or oil dilution.
- Inspect oil pump pickup screen. Sludge or debris starves the pump. Common after extended drain intervals.
- Confirm bearing clearance. Plastigauge during teardown. Excess clearance = drops pressure under load.
BAY-FLOOR RULES
When the customer says "low oil pressure"
- Light flickering at idle, fine above 1500 RPM = low oil level or thinned oil.
- Light steady at all RPMs = pressure switch, sender wiring, or actual pump failure.
- Low cold, normal warm = wrong grade (too thin cold) or stuck relief valve.
- Normal cold, low warm = bearing wear, fuel dilution, oil pump wear.
- Stays dropped after warm = mechanical fault — bearings, pump, or pickup. Diagnose before driving.
