A2 ATF Fluid Diagnosis
Color, smell, contamination, particulate. The fluid on the dipstick tells you what\'s happening inside the transmission before you ever drop the pan. Read it first.
SAMPLE PROCEDURE
- Sample with engine at operating temp, in PARK, on level surface.
- Wipe dipstick on a white paper towel — color and contaminants jump out.
- Smell on a fresh swatch, away from exhaust fumes.
- Drop a sample on white paper, let it spread — look at the wet ring vs dry ring.
HEALTHY
Bright Red, Clear
Translucent ruby-red. Mild petroleum smell. New fluid color depends on additive package but should be vivid.
ACTION: None. Document baseline.
USED
Dark Brown
Used but not yet failing. Burnt smell faint. Heat-cycled additives oxidized but no contamination.
ACTION: Service interval flush or drain-and-fill due. No internal damage indicated.
FAILING
Black, Burnt Smell
Charcoal-black, strong acrid burnt smell. Friction material has overheated and is breaking down.
ACTION: Internal clutch damage likely. Quote for tear-down inspection or full rebuild.
CONTAMINATED
Milky Pink
Strawberry-milkshake appearance. Coolant intrusion from a failed trans cooler in the radiator or external cooler line.
ACTION: Isolate cooler. Flush trans, replace fluid, replace cooler. Coolant kills clutch friction material.
METAL DEBRIS
Glittery / Sparkly
Visible metal flake on the dipstick. Bearings, gears, or thrust washers wearing out and contaminating the fluid.
ACTION: Drop the pan and inspect filter and magnet. Quantify debris before quoting rebuild.
FRICTION DUST
Gray with Particulate
Grayish color from suspended clutch friction material dust. Indicates active wear on clutches.
ACTION: Drop pan, inspect filter. Common precursor to total clutch failure. Quote remaining life.
OXIDIZED
Dark Red, Varnish Smell
Red but darker than baseline, with a faint varnish or burnt-toast smell. Fluid was overheated but not destroyed.
ACTION: Flush and replace. Check trans cooler operation and ambient cooling.
WRONG FLUID
Yellow / Off-Color
Off-spec fluid added by previous shop or DIY. Common: Dexron in a CVT, generic ATF in a DSG.
ACTION: Full flush with correct OE-spec fluid. Wrong fluid is a top-3 cause of premature shift complaints.
BAY-FLOOR RULES
Quick decisions
- Pink/milky fluid = coolant intrusion. Don\'t drive — destroys clutches fast.
- Black + burnt smell = clutch damage, document mileage and severity for the customer.
- Glitter on dipstick = hard parts wearing out. Drop pan for filter + magnet inspection.
- "My oil change place flushed it" = verify OE fluid type. Wrong fluid causes complaints within 500 miles.
- Brown but no burnt smell = age, not failure. Drain-and-fill, no internal concern.
