CLUTCH SLIP DIAGNOSIS CHART
Slip, chatter, grab, and release problems decoded by the conditions that trigger them. The matrix that turns a customer complaint into a parts list.
Customers say "the clutch is bad." What they mean lives in one of four buckets. Get the right bucket before you quote anything.

The pedal tells you a lot before you look at anything. Sit in the driver's seat and step on it — what you feel narrows the diagnosis to hydraulic vs mechanical fast.

Customer says "clutch is slipping." Don't tear it down yet. Walk this path.
STEP 1 · CONFIRM IT'S ACTUALLY THE CLUTCH
Drive the vehicle. From a stop in 3rd gear at idle, slowly release the clutch with light throttle. If the engine doesn't bog and you don't move, you've confirmed slip. If the engine bogs and stalls, the clutch is holding — slip complaint is something else (TPS, fuel, ignition).
STEP 2 · CHECK FREE PLAY + ADJUSTMENT
Hydraulic systems should have ~5–15mm of pedal slack before the master engages. Cable systems usually have ~25mm of pedal free play at the top. Too little free play = release bearing preloaded against fingers = constant partial release = slip. Free play is the cheapest fix on the list — check it first.
STEP 3 · CHECK FOR OIL CONTAMINATION
Pop the inspection cover. If you see oil drips at the bottom of the bellhousing, the clutch is contaminated and replacement won't last unless you fix the leak source. Common sources: rear main seal, input shaft seal, valve cover dripping onto bellhousing, oil pan leak running back.
STEP 4 · TEMP CORRELATION
Cold-only slip = often glazing, may break in. Hot-only slip = rear main seal or pressure plate breaking down with heat. All-conditions slip = mechanical wear; quote the job.
STEP 5 · QUOTE THE COMPLETE JOB
Never replace just the friction disc. Always quote disc + pressure plate + release bearing + pilot bearing + resurface or replace flywheel + replace rear main seal + clean and inspect input shaft seal. If you don't, the customer comes back in 6 months because one of the unreplaced parts fails. Time-in-bay savings on a partial job cost more than the cost of the parts.
Putting a new disc against an old pressure plate is a comeback waiting to happen. Heat-checked flywheel destroys the new disc in weeks. Old pilot bearing seizes the input shaft. Worn release bearing screams in 30 days. Quote the complete kit + flywheel work + rear main seal every time.
Worn mounts let the powertrain move under torque. The customer feels chatter, you blame the clutch, you do an expensive job — and the chatter comes right back. Inspect motor mounts, transmission mounts, and torque struts before condemning the clutch.
Customers who ride the clutch, hold the pedal at stoplights, or launch at high RPM burn discs in 30k miles. If the disc is at minimum thickness on a 60k-mile vehicle and you don't have a conversation about technique, you're shipping a comeback. Diagnose the operator alongside the parts.
Air in the clutch hydraulic system reduces pedal travel and prevents full release — which can mimic slip under load. Always bleed the system first, verify clean pedal feel and full release at the pedal, THEN diagnose slip. Air is free to fix; clutch jobs aren't.
