Dry-Park Test Procedure
- Vehicle on level ground, wheels straight, engine off.
- Have a helper rock the steering wheel back and forth a few degrees.
- Observe each tie rod end, ball joint, and idler arm (if equipped) for movement that shouldn\'t exist.
- Specifically look at the connection points — if you see "click-and-then-move" before the wheel rotates, the play is in that joint.
- Compare to opposite side. Side-to-side discrepancy = worn part.
BAY-FLOOR RULES
Replacement triggers
- Any boot torn on a ball joint or tie rod end → replace. Grit kills the joint in months.
- Any perceptible play on a ball joint → replace. There\'s no spec for "a little play."
- Any movement in tie rod end during dry-park → replace. Tie rod ends should be zero play.
- Replace tie rod ends in pairs when one side has measurable play.
- Alignment is mandatory after any tie rod, ball joint, or steering linkage replacement.
- Loaded vs unloaded ball joint matters — measure with the joint loaded the way it sees the road.
