R-1234yf vs R-134a
Refrigerant identification, operating pressures, lubricant compatibility, evacuation, and tool requirements. Cross-contamination kills systems — know the difference cold.
Identification is non-negotiable. Cross-contaminating refrigerants destroys compressors, contaminates recovery equipment, and voids warranty. Five-second check before connecting any hoses.

If the under-hood label is missing or unreadable, default to electronic identification. Never assume — modern aftermarket sealants can contaminate systems that should be one refrigerant or the other.
Refrigerant pressures are similar but not identical. Ambient temperature, humidity, and engine RPM all shift the targets. These are the centerlines.

Static (engine off, system at rest): pressure should match ambient temperature on a saturation chart. A reading 20+ psi below saturation = system is low on charge.
Wrong oil = compressor failure. Each refrigerant has a specific PAG oil specification. Aftermarket POE has appeared in some hybrid/EV systems. Always check the under-hood label or service info.

The whole point of different service port sizes is to prevent cross-contamination. Don't defeat it with adapters.

"It's a 2018 — must be R-1234yf." Wrong. A previous shop may have charged 134a into the system illegally, used a sealant, or topped with hydrocarbon refrigerant. Identify electronically before connecting your machine, or you contaminate your recovery tank and ruin every system you service afterward. Identifier cost: $1,200. Replacement recovery tank when cross-contaminated: $4,000+.
PAG 46 and PAG 46 YF are not the same. Wrong oil + refrigerant doesn't fail immediately — the compressor runs for weeks or months, then seizes from poor lubrication. Customer comes back, you eat a compressor + condenser + receiver-drier. Always verify oil spec on the under-hood label or in OEM service info. Universal PAGs are not OEM service info.
Pulling a quick 5-minute vacuum before recharging leaves moisture in the system. Moisture + refrigerant + heat = acids that destroy the compressor over 6–12 months. 500 microns for 30 minutes is the standard. If the vacuum holds 500 microns for 5 minutes after the pump is closed, the system is dry and leak-tight. Don't recharge until it does.
EVs running R-1234yf with electric heat-pump compressors use POE oil, multiple expansion valves, and refrigerant-cooled battery loops. Wrong oil or low refrigerant in an EV system has battery-cooling consequences, not just cabin comfort. Always reference OEM-specific procedure for EV HVAC — these aren't conventional R-1234yf systems.
