A7 Service Procedure Card

3-phase A/C service done correctly: recovery, evacuation, and charging — with pass criteria, common mistakes, and ballpark charge weights for common platforms.

UNIVERSAL RULES

PHASE 1

Recover

15-30 min · machine + scale

  1. ID refrigerant type
  2. Connect machine, open valves
  3. Run cycle until system at ≤ 0 psi for 5 min
  4. Weigh recovered refrigerant for invoicing

PASS

Machine signals complete; system holds at slight vacuum

PHASE 2

Evacuate

30-45 min + 15 min hold

  1. Connect 2-stage vacuum pump and micron gauge
  2. Pull vacuum to ≤ 500 microns
  3. Close manifold valves to isolate pump
  4. Hold 15 min; watch micron gauge

PASS

Rise ≤ 1000 microns over 15 min hold

PHASE 3

Charge

10-15 min · scale required

  1. Read OE underhood charge spec
  2. Place tank on calibrated scale
  3. Open HIGH side; vacuum draws liquid
  4. Close at exact target weight
  5. Start engine, verify pressures + vent temp

PASS

Pressures stabilize for ambient; vent ≤ 50°F at idle, max A/C

Common Charge Weight Reference

Always verify against underhood label — these are typical ranges only.

CRITICAL FAIL POINTS

Skip these at your own risk

  1. Short evac (15 min): Moisture stays in. Forms acid with oil. Compressor failure in months.
  2. No vacuum hold test: Undetected leak. Customer comes back next month.
  3. Eyeball charge: Over/undercharge by 20%. Performance complaints or compressor damage.
  4. Mixed refrigerants: Recovery tank contamination. Whole tank scrapped. Customer pays.
  5. Oxygen pressurization: Explosion risk. Use nitrogen only.
  6. Skipping drier replacement after open: Moisture saturates desiccant. Replace drier any time system is open more than 15 min.
