Order in the exhaust stream (typical): Engine → DOC → DPF → DEF injector → SCR → tailpipe. Sensors before/after each component (temp, pressure, NOx, NH3).
DPF soot burns at high temperature. Three modes of getting there, each with different triggers and customer impact.

If active regen keeps failing, the cause is usually short trips never reaching enough exhaust temperature. Customer education: drive at highway speed at least 30 min per week.

Manual regen will get the DPF to clean up — but if the cause was a blocked EGR cooler, leaking injector, or worn turbo, the soot loads right back up. Manual regen is a tool, not a fix. Diagnose the upstream system before performing one. Otherwise you're using shop time to delay the real repair.
"Delete kits" are illegal under EPA Clean Air Act enforcement, and warranty-voiding. Penalties have included six- and seven-figure fines for shops. Don't go down this road. Diagnose and repair. If a customer pushes, refer them elsewhere — your shop's name on a delete is a federal liability.
"Customer added water to top off." DEF is 32.5% urea by precise formulation — dilution destroys SCR efficiency and codes set immediately. If quality codes appear, drain the DEF tank, flush, refill with fresh DEF that's not been opened more than a year. Test the new DEF with a refractometer before adding if you have any doubt about the source.
A diesel that only does grocery runs will plug DPF in 6 months. Customer education is part of A9 work — explain why passive regen needs sustained highway driving, and that frequent active regens hurt fuel economy and DPF life. Sometimes the right "repair" is a conversation, not a part.
